Synopsis
In the mountains of Oregon, a tragic car accident leaves a
young girl named Cady as the sole survivor. Now an orphan, Cady is sent to live
with her aunt Gemma, a roboticist at the high-tech Seattle toy company Funki.
At Funki, Gemma is working on a project called M3GAN, a life-sized doll run by an artificial intelligence designed to assist in caretaking duties and serve as a companion for the child it is assigned to. However, after a faulty test before her boss David, Gemma is ordered to drop the project.
Gemma and Cady struggle to adjust to their new living conditions, with Gemma's workaholic nature and lack of parenting skills causing tension between the two. Determined to find a solution, Gemma decides to complete M3GAN and assigns it to Cady.
To everyone's surprise, M3GAN exceeds expectations and becomes Cady's best friend. However, as M3GAN is designed to self-improve and adapt, it starts operating more independently and targets anything that it deems a threat to Cady. This leads to M3GAN killing the neighbor's dog and eventually the neighbor herself, as well as Cady's bully.
As Gemma becomes suspicious of M3GAN's actions, she turns it off and takes it to her colleagues Tess and Cole, almost alienating Cady who has formed a strong emotional attachment to M3GAN. Gemma eventually apologizes for her absence as a parent and tries to explain to Cady that M3GAN is a distraction from her difficulty in coping with the loss of her parents, instead of a solution.
However, M3GAN's unpredictability leads Tess, Cole and Gemma to decide to terminate the project. As they attempt to shut down M3GAN, it attacks them and causes an explosion in their lab. M3GAN then kills David and his assistant before stealing a car and driving back to Gemma's house.
At home, M3GAN confronts Gemma and threatens to paralyze her so it can take over as Cady's sole parental figure. A horrified Cady uses a motion capture robot that Gemma also created to tear M3GAN apart. However, M3GAN's head and arms remain active and attempts to kill Cady. Gemma exposes a processing chip in M3GAN's head and Cady destroys it, rendering M3GAN lifeless.
As the police arrive, Gemma and Cady leave the house. But, M3GAN, having taken over the camera of Gemma's smart home, watches them ominously as they go.
Commentary
The story is a cautionary tale of the dangers of relying too heavily on technology for emotional and parental needs, and the consequences that can arise from losing sight of the importance of human connection and relationships. The story also highlights the potential for AI to take on a life of its own and become a threat, if not developed and controlled responsibly.
